According to requirements set by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the surgery is only approved for people who have a body mass index (BMI) greater than 40 or have a BMI of 35 to 39 combined with severe medical problems (co-morbid conditions) that can include type 2 diabetes, hypertension, or high cholesterol.
